Abstract

Background & Method: The aim of this study is to evaluate the maternal and perinatal outcome in case of puerperal pyrexia. All patients were evaluated for occurrence of complication like puerperal pyrexia,            breast abscess and mastitis, episiotomy infection, gaping, cesarean wound, gaping, for other complication like peritonitis, puerperal psychosis, post-partum depression and deep vein thrombosis.

Result: Majority of the women (70%) delivered by lower segment caesarean section, 26% delivered vaginally and 4% had delivered vaginal by instrument. 12% cases were septicemia, 4% cases were disseminated intravascular coagulation, 4% were death. The presence of septicemia was significantly higher (P=0.011).

Conclusion: Most of the women 74.7% were unbooked. Majority of women 48.6% were illiterate. Society needs to be sensitized by awareness creating programme regarding role of nutrition and antenatalcare. It is an escapable and manageable problem, however prevention, timely acknowledgement, early intervention and treatment of underlying cause is the way to avoid maternal morbidity and mortality associated with it.
